Palmetto Recording Artist and Grammy Nominee Kate McGarry is widely recognized as one of the most diverse talents in modern jazz, bringing authenticity and vitality to an extraordinarily wide range of material. Her training in jazz performance with legendary saxophonist, Archie Shepp; her time living in a meditation ashram; her studies in Celtic, Brazilian and Indian music—each of these factors has allowed McGarry to evolve into a deeply compelling vocalist, arranger, composer and teacher. She has recorded 4 critically acclaimed CDs for the Palmetto Records label, the most recent of which, If Less Is More, Nothing Is Everything, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal in 2009. The Wall St. Journal called the recording, "austere and elegant...an exceptionally appealing blend of folk and jazz."

Kate has recorded and toured with such jazz luminaries as Hank Jones, Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, and Maria Schneider, and has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, Piano Jazz with Marion McPartland and Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater. She has performed in NYC at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Birdland and at festivals and Performing Arts Centers throughout the world. She can be seen on Chick Corea’s DVD, Rendevous, singing “Smile” with Bobby McFerrin. In 2009 and 2010 Kate toured Eastern Europe and South America representing the U.S. State Dept. and Jazz At Lincoln Center as a Rhythm Road Jazz Ambassador. Downbeat Magazine has cited McGarry as a “Rising Star Vocalist” 3 years running. She is currently working on her 5th Palmetto cd due for release in 2011.

The Nashville Scene noted, “McGarry embraces jazz’s freedom and points the genre toward a future that’s as fresh and thrilling as it’s past.”
